Effect of VR-based COVID Blue Alleviation ProgramWith Occupation-Based Activities on Social Isolationand Emotions for the Community Dwelling Elderly:A Preliminary Study

Abstract
Objective : This study aims to test the feasibility of a virtual reality-based COVID Blue alleviation program combined with occupation-based activities for the elderly.

Methods : The program was conducted with four community-dwelling elderly in rural area. Seven sessions were provided three times a week. Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), Social Avoidance and Distress Scale (SADS), and Lubben Social Network Scale (LSNS) were uesd to evaluate its effectiveness. Statistical analysis was performed through Jamovi 2.2.1.

Results : As a result, the average depression and social avoidance and anxiety of the subjects decreased, but it was not statistically significant. On the other hand, the feeling of social isolation was rather increased, but it was also not statistically significant. Satisfaction with the program was high at 8.3 out of 10.

Conclusion : The COVID Blue alleviation program using VR had positive effects on depression, social avoidance and anxiety, and social isolation for the elderly to some extent. Furthermore, it is necessary to verify the effectiveness of the program using a large sample.
